At Anthony Aiden Opticians, we have been serving residents of New York, NY and neighboring cities since 1989. We offer eye and vision care services, designer eyewear, prescription eyeglasses, and sunglasses. These eye and vision care services include eye exams to get the right type of contact lenses. We provide specialty contact lenses for those with eye or vision conditions. If you are hard to fit for contacts, we will help you find the right lenses so you can see clearly.

What Are Specialty Lenses?

Not everyone can wear typical contact lenses. A specialty lens is made to suit different types of eye and vision needs. Specialty lenses are mostly required for people that have corneal conditions or other requirements that cannot be met with regular contact lenses. Specialty lenses are shaped differently or made from different materials.

Who Needs Specialty Lenses?

One of the most common reasons to need a specialty lens is an irregularly shaped cornea. Those who have keratoconus or corneal transplants can benefit from specialty lenses. Other eye conditions, such as dry eye, can also make regular contacts uncomfortable for many people. People with severe astigmatism may also need special contact lenses.

Types of Specialty Contact Lenses

When you visit our optometrist, we will perform a thorough eye exam to determine if you have any conditions or vision problems. Our optometrist can then fit you for specialty contacts.

Specialty contact lenses include rigid gas permeable contact lenses, scleral contact lenses, hybrid contact lenses, orthokeratology contact lenses, and more.

For those who have irregularly shaped corneas, scleral lenses are a great option for vision correction. Scleral lenses rest on the sclera, the white of the eye, instead of the cornea. These lenses are designed to encase the eye and cover the entire cornea. This type of eye lens can also be used for a cornea that has an irregular curvature.

Rigid gas permeable lenses are used for those who suffer from dry eye. The lenses allow oxygen to lass through them, so they don’t absorb as much moisture.

With Ortho-K or orthokeratology contact lenses, you get a specialty lens that can gently reshape the cornea. These types of lenses are worn overnight to reshape the cornea and need to be used regularly. If you suffer from conditions such as myopia, astigmatism, or hyperopia, you can use Ortho-k contact lenses.

Hybrid lenses are used for those who have more than one vision condition and need several prescriptions.
